Sigmund Freud published The Interpretation of Dreams in November 1899, post-dating it 1900 to align it with the new century. He considered it his most important work. The book argues that dreams are not random neural noise or divine messages but fulfillments of unconscious wishes, that dream content, however strange, is motivated by wishes the dreamer cannot acknowledge while awake. The central case is Freud's own "Irma injection" dream, which he analyzes in detail to demonstrate the method. The book introduces the topographical model of the mind, conscious, preconscious, and unconscious, and the distinction between the manifest content of dreams (what is remembered) and the latent content (what the dream expresses symbolically).
Freud's method of dream interpretation, tracing associations from each dream element back to recent events and deeper wishes, was designed to make the unconscious accessible through the analyst's guided questioning rather than the dreamer's deliberate introspection. The theory of the Oedipus complex appears in the book's fourth chapter, applied to Hamlet and Oedipus Rex as literary evidence of universal unconscious content. Whether the Oedipus complex is universal and whether Freud's dream interpretations are reliable accounts of his patients' unconscious processes are questions that have been disputed by psychologists since the work's publication. The hermeneutic method, reading behavior and speech for hidden meaning, has been more durable than the specific theoretical claims.
The Interpretation of Dreams belongs to intellectual history as much as to clinical psychology, it established a vocabulary (repression, wish fulfillment, the unconscious as active rather than merely dormant) that shaped the twentieth century's understanding of mental life regardless of whether the specific claims survive scientific scrutiny. Reading the book now, with the awareness of subsequent criticism, allows one to distinguish the scientific claims from the hermeneutic method and to assess what the method achieves independently of the theory. What Freud demonstrated, at minimum, is that attention to apparently arbitrary mental content can reveal motivations that the thinking mind does not recognize in itself.
